E-mail Systems - The Basics
Understanding the basics of email systems is helpful to aid in proper e-mail deliverability. Most e-mail systems contain what is called an SPF record or Sender Policy Framework. This is an email validation protocol designed to allow receiving mail exchangers to verify that incoming mail from a domain comes from an IP Address authorized by that domain's administrators. It was developed to help combat email spoofing.
Think of this SPF record as the "home or guaranteed address" of a domain. Many email systems are setup to look for that SPF record. Typically, this SPF record is stored in the headers of an email, which will acknowledge back to the email system "this is legitimate."
